It Doesn't Have to be this Way

Alternative Title: Let's Live in the Future Others Dreamed About. 
Last week I was going through the final edits of an application for an absolute pie-in-the-sky dream job with my good friend who lives on the literal other side of the planet. As we worked through the text I could see her cursor move; it was even labeled with her name. We were FaceTiming on our phones and each had the document pulled up on our laptops. It was the future as forecasted by fiction, as were were thousands of miles apart and connected at multiple points. If we can achieve this level of technological synchronicity why can't we figure out ways not to kill each other? Why are we a world at war? Why can't I safely teach on a university campus? Why are so many still unable to get basic medical care or adequate housing?
