AT&T covers 97% of Americans.

While driving past this billboard on a recent trip my brain went into question overdrive: What in tarnation does that mean? Who are Americans? How can AT&T cover them? What if they are abroad? I do not understand the idea being communicated here. So what do you make up about that? Well Mom says that it means a geographic region. Dad says out of the AT&T customers they can only cover 97% and some other things that I am not remembering because I still don't get it... Anyone have some insight?

:-) since I too was suckered about 15 years ago to become an Att customer I can understand this to mean that it covers me about 97 percent of the time *i think* The only place I don't get coverage is in the Adirondacks at camp. I was covered in Europe -nicely- even nicer than Verizon customers.
At times, that 3 percent non coverage, really STINKS!! ps...I think you're going to have a blast trekking around America in that lovely thing!!! Have fun and keep updating :-D

This means that AT&T covers where 97% of Americans reside. So, basically, big cities and coastal regions will have coverage while large, open spaces (such is Montana, for example, and much of the regions between the coasts) will be unreachable by AT&T's signal.

For what it's worth, that's what I have always felt it meant.
