When I was little, despite playing a pipe (flute) my only experience with the word piping was a next door neighbor who smoked a tobacco pipe. It always smelled wonderful. I thought the true love was giving eleven men to perfume the air. It didn't seem like a weird gift to me; especially because of the barnyard smells that would be present with the other gifts, just think of all those birds. Ergo I never questioned it. It wasn't until later when I saw an image depicting the 12 days of Christmas that I realized the song was referring to a musical instrument. But I still like the smell of pipe tobacco smoked outside so, in tribute to my first concept, I present you with the pipers piping pattern. Happy Monday Y'all!
The leaping lords are a jaunty graphic representation that I think would look fun as a repeat on wrapping paper. Their button eyes were the cause of much deliberation, but I think they help the patterns movement, particularly when the overall image is shrunk. Hope y'all on the east coast are staying warm & that if you have to travel are safe. Happy Friday Y'all!
And on the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me, seven swans-a-swimming etc. While I did not overtly depict water or swimming I think the undulating pattern of the swans neck & back is sufficiently aquatic. Hope the rest of your day
Yesterday, when walking on the bluff, there was an absolute proliferation of stripes. Some of these are always present, like the stairs & the water line on the supporting rocks, but with the inclusion of the clouds & the very gentle lapping waves you have double the number of visible stripes. So I thought I would share them with yHappy Monday Y'all!
Many of my patterns come about because of deliberate mark-making with brush. A firm pressing down of pigment to page in much the same way that you could edition a linocut. While the editioning of this pattern does not pass muster for a clean edition it does work as a repeat pattern with its variations creating interest. I realize more & more that it doesn't matter what material I work with my printmaking roots will always prevail. Long live printmaking!
In other printmaking news my friends at Ink+Smog Editions have just launched a Kickstarter. As always if you cannot give, no problem, please consider sharing their project on social media. Happy Friday Y'all!
Here's a sunflower for your Friday. Hope your week has gone well! I'll be posting more drawings over the weekend, so be sure & stop by. Happy Friday Y'all!
This past weekend one of my best friends got married. She kept it simple with gold & silver accents. Following the wedding there was a lovely cake reception. I painted the cups. Or rather I should say I printed the cups, using a simple wooden pencil eraser. I often encounter people that think of printmaking as an erudite, esoteric thing, but the truth is that all of us interact with prints everyday & most of us have probably done some form of printmaking in our lives. I am constantly striving to simplify the definition of printmaking & the closest I have come is the transference of an image from one thing to another, something that can be editioned. Have a good weekend y'all! And if you are looking for a fun book (that has a lot of polka dots) check out the Kate Spade Things We Love book; it is a great reminder of everything that is wonderful about printed books. |
