I read 33 books in August. And they were, as a  whole, quite serious. The ones that I have highlighted here utilize different formats. They are thoroughly researched and integrated. Interested in the morality of humans going to space? Astrotopia by Mary-Jane Rubenstein is the book for you. Want to consider the plight of human refugees? Might I recommend A Map of Future Ruins by Lauren Markham. How about biometric theft? Your Face Belongs to Us by Kashmir Hill is an excellent primer on the topic. What exactly is happening in North Korea? Your guess is as good as mine, and Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick relates through investigative journalism just how unknown the situation is, even by North Korean citizens. Want a framework for different ways of understanding the American politic? The first couple of essays in When I Was a Child I Read Books by Marilynne Robinson offers just that. Ever wonder about the actual workers that acquire raw oil? Pearce Oysters by Joselyn Takacs is a gut-wrenching eco-fiction about life on the American Gulf Coast in the wake of an oil spill.
