Rotund

The work I have been admiring lately by Stella Maria Baer & Lorraine Loots is round. As someone that has spent the majority of the past decade exploring stripes it is interesting that the work I like looking at is round. I am in the camp of artists that believes in making artwork you, yourself want to live with. So there is the distinct possibility that I will be exploring these pebble shapes for awhile, or perhaps I just enjoy looking at them & have no desire to create them. Only time will tell, so stay tuned. Happy Friday Y'all!

For the Birds

Somedays I have to take a break from all the "real art" & just paint silly stuff like this bird. It frees my hand & mind, takes away the thought that I "must make Art." There are times when you have to give your hand & mind freedom to explore other avenues, experiment with different techniques without a care as to the end result. In other bird related news: I have been seeing a lot of bluebirds recently & their color looks so much like a flying piece of sky it shocks me everytime. Happy Thursday Y'all!

Seeing Too Much

Yesterday I had my eyes dilated during my yearly eye exam. You would think that having your eyes wide open would be a good thing, that the world would come into clearer focus, that you would see more detail, that all would be revealed... Maybe I'm getting carried away with my hopes for vision, but you get the idea. Unfortunately the opposite happens, your vision blurs, the light is offensive, and if you are like me you spend the rest of the day in a dark room with sunglasses on waiting for your sight to be restored, as trying to focus your eyes on anything is futile. As a visual person not being able to take in the world around me is challenging, but it provides a pause & brings me back to sight with renewed vigor. Happy Wednesday Y'all!

Course Corrections

This painting has a lot less of the salt detailing, but still manages to convey the topographical qualities that I find intriguing in this series. What is it they say about steering a boat? Small course corrections are all it takes. The same is true in painting. Just a little less, a little more of this or that & the result is entirely different. As always I am sure there is a broader more moral lesson to be learned in this as well regarding our actions & words to each other. Things to think about & paint about. Happy Tuesday Y'all!

Flame of the Week: Indanthrene Blue

Indanthrene Blue. What a name. I love the coldness of this color & the fact that it is made using salt. It is one of Winsor & Newton's colours with a Permanence rating of A, which means that it goes from very light to very dark with a smoothness. While I make the paint repel itself & become granular with the salt, I prefer it to start even. I am sure this color will be showing up in my paintings soon. Happy Friday Y'all!

Radical View

The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out the conservative adopts them.      - Mark Twain, Notebook, 1935
I am not suggesting, by pairing this painting with the Twain quote, that my work is radical or new, in any way, but I have been thinking about what behaviour, or ideas, are considered extreme, which are blaise, & what does it mean to be a radical? Happy Thursday Y'all!

Learning Days

Yesterday was a learning day in the studio. I tried emulating my process with a lot of salt for another algae painting, but ended up with something much more like lichen, close but not the desired species. I also attempted an aerial view with warm colors... When I posted a questioning photo of the painting to Instagram, my undergraduate classmate Grant Hanna, whose work you should definitely check out, kindly informed me that, "Warm colors are for accents only!". I am not going to argue with him in this instance. Who knows what I will learn today? I guess we will find out tomorrow. Happy Wednesday Y'all!

Algae

This painting reminds me more of algae than the other aerial views. Perhaps because of my rigorous use of salt. It has some of the elements, but seems determined to move into another arena. Perhaps I will explore this edge, or perhaps resume my previous course. Navigating these choices is what keeps the work exciting & fresh. Happy Tuesday Y'all!
