I love Valentine's Day! The flowers, the chocolate, the profusion of red & pink, sweet/saccharine sentiments, the hoopla of the day. In light of this I thought sharing some of my homemade Valentine's would not be amiss! Happy Valentine's Day Y'all!

The nostalgia of Jessica Brilli's work is infused with new life by her thoroughly contemporary color choices. I can not help but draw comparisons to Edward Hopper's contemplative work. I highly recommend keeping up to date with Jessica's openings & such on Facebook, purusing her insightful Pinterest boards, checking out her Instagram for paintings & because cats, and last, but not least check her Twitter for more, honest insights. Her #PaletteProject responses are included below. What color do you wish wasn't there? I used to hate working with greens, but I've gotten more comfortable with them. Now I'm at peace with all of the colors. What is your favorite brush? I get a lot of use out of the medium sized filbert brushes. What is your favorite paper/surface to paint on? Canvas, sometimes wood panel What is your favorite color to work with? The blue family is a lot of fun to work with. By Billy Collins
All afternoon I have been struggling to communicate in Italian with Roberto and Giuseppe who have begun to resemble the two male characters in my Italian for Beginners, the ones always shopping, eating, or inquiring about the times of trains. Now I can feel my English slipping away, like chlorinated water through my fingers. I have made important pronouncements in this remote limestone valley with its trickle of a river. I stated that it seems hotter today even than it was yesterday and that swimming is very good for you, very beneficial, you might say. I also posed burning questions about the hours of the archaeological museum and the location of the local necropolis. But now I am alone in the evening light which has softened the white cliffs, and I have had a little gin in a glass with ice which has softened my mood or- how would you say in English- has allowed my thoughts to traverse my brain with greater gentleness, shall we say, or, to put it less literally, this drink has extended permission to my mind to feel-what’s the word?- a friendship with the vast sky which is very-give me a minute-very blue but with much great paleness at this special time of day, or as we say in America, now. From Nine Horses (Random House) Presenting Rosettes! New Pattern on society6 products! Get it while the gettings good! Free Worldwide Shipping! This pattern is the direct result of me carving linoleum. I carved a single camellia & then went to work in photoshop. I have a hunch that next week might see some different iterations of this pattern, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy this one.
Yes it is Thursday. No I am not sharing a painting. Great Story huh? I carved some linoleum this week & wanted to share it instead. Did any of you live thru great stories this week? Let me know in the comments!
Sally Tharp paints still lifes with vibrancy & meaning. They echo with light & precision. The painting included below is part of a new series about the tangible things that humans keep. Often titles are a throwaway, an afterthought, but this title ties in seamlessly (pun intended). Sally's inclusion of paint color names alongside her palette shows the attention to detail needed to produce work of this caliber. Needless to say you should check out more of her work online & in person after enjoying her palette project responses below. I use such a limited palette that I am grateful for all the colors. The one I probably use the least is the Cad red, which has an orange feel, but I really use all of them. I only recently started using the cerulean blue, so I guess I did without it for many years, but I like it very much now.
My favorite brushes are flat synthetics- I like the way they hold paint and use them for finish work I have just begun to work on linens, which I love, and am excited to try the the gessoed paper as well. I used to do a lot of charcoals and I think painting on paper would have a nice feel.
I take a lot of photos. This probably comes as no surprise to regular followers of this blog. And I like sharing photos on Mondays as it gives me the opportunity to review the previous weeks work & plan for the upcoming one. Review/ critique is important & approaching subjects from different angles is crucial for success. Do you have any compositions/conundrums that would benefit from a different perspective?
