Rain Chains

The rain chains are still frozen. For all y'all that have never heard of a rain chain, it is a gutter downspout, that precipitation just flows down in the warmer months. They look very beautiful during storms & while I have tried numerous times to get a documented moment video clip of the rain chain in action, it never turns out correctly. However this stilled frozen landscape has lent itself to rain chain documentation. The ice is so clear & reflective, really beautiful. I hope you have a weekend filled with beauty. Happy Friday Y'all!

Carpe Diem

I tend to overthink things. A lot. Sometimes so much that it impedes my progress. The author/ orator of these words is unknown, but I think these words fit nicely in the carpe diem pantheon of things I need to remember. Happy Thursday Y'all!

Frozen Flowers

It is icing outside right now. It started a few hours ago & sounded like hail inside. But when you go outside it sounds like rain in the gutters & snow on the ground. The flowers look like they are crying or sweating depending on the angle, but the reality is none of the water is moving on them; it is all frozen in place. All of the paradoxi depict the feeling I had when viewing ice on the tropical forest, weird & slightly unsettling. I am certain there will be interesting things to see & I will keep my eyes open. Happy Wednesday Y'all!

I am working on a new series, but not yet certain of the finished paintings. If they resolve I will share more images with you. In the meantime here are some process shots. Happy Tuesday

Gentle Waves

We have had unusually cold temperatures for much of January but extremely clear skies & many times minimal wind, a definite rarity in this area. When the wind dies down, the water gets much calmer & the waves lap gently. I find it incredibly mesmerizing. Happy Monday Y'all!

Sky Colors

Last night the sunset was particularly pink. So much so that the water appeared pink as well. It was really remarkable. I have been trying to pull colors from nature in the Oyster Shell series & last night after the sunset attempted to use the electric pink. The results were less than stellar & this pink remains elusive, for the time being. But today is another day to try. Happy Friday Y'all!

Process

The experiment with layers continues. I used the Princeton Neptune dagger brush for the image on the left and the Princeton Neptune oval wash brush for the image below to lay down the white gouache first. For the image on the left I laid down a very wet saturated wash of Winsor red & then mopped up a lot of it, while adding color back in with my brush. For the painting below I added a moderately wet wash of Winsor red & then salted the image strategically. I am intrigued with both of these results. The varying textures evoked by each, the nuance that shows in different lighting, how you can almost see the patterns & then they stop. Definitely things I want to keep playing with. Happy Thursday Y'all!

I wanted to see what would happen if I printed the gouache first and then laid the wash on top. The effect is divergent, much more organic, not so regimented. I will play more with the different layering of these two paints. The effect is so disparate that I am not sure which I prefer or which is closer to what I want to say. Hence my continued experimentation. Hope your week is off to a solid start. Happy Wednesday Y'all!

Dolphins

Yesterday the weather was gorgeous & friends with a boat were calling. No brainer, skip the studio, for a day & go outside. It was so worth it! In this clip you can see a dolphin surfacing thru the wake multiple times. Below are some observed shadows & the tide gullies running thru the pluff mud. Plenty of things to see & inform my studio practice, but while I was out there all I had to do was enjoy. Happy Tuesday Y'all!

Book Review

I often go to the bookstore on Sunday evenings; it's relatively quiet & you can puruse in peace. Last night I found three wonderful books that just had to come home with me. Pom-Poms! by Sarah Goldschadt & Lexi Walters Wright, Made by Hand by Lena Corwin, & Dog Songs by Mary Oliver. The only one of those I had previously heard of was Dog Songs. It is so spot on (pun intended) in describing dogs, that any person has spent a modicum of time around fido will attest to their veracity & enjoy a knowing chuckle.

Pom-Poms! sucked me in thoroughly with 25  varied pom projects. I love a good polka dot & pom poms are just their natural progression into three dimensional form. So excited to try out some of these projects!

Last but certainly not least there was the Made by Hand book. The first project with rolling pin printing captivated me so thoroughly that I knew I was not leaving the store without this book. The other projects that followed were equally compelling. I am so looking forward to pursuing some of these projects a bit further. Huge props to Lena Corwin for compiling such a wonderful collection.

I would certainly encourage you to check out these books. They have gotten me excited about a lot of different things, which I think is crucial for maintaining a balanced studio practice & in the case of Dog Songs left me thoroughly amused. I leave you with Mary Oliver reading a poem from Dog Songs. Happy Monday Y'all!
