I spent this past weekend at Creative South. It was awesome talking about art & design all weekend with other people that are passionate about our visual world. These are the 5 things that most stand out from the talks. 1. Dig the Ditch: Do the hard work, it might not be glamourous, but it is productive to not have your field flood. 2. Help your friends: Do NOT allow your mama's pie shop to have an ugly logo, fix that before you do anything else! 3. Prioritize: If you do not have enough time stop watching tv, or playing video games, whatever is taking you away from your work. 4. Value Custom: Anyone can use that font, but not everyone can design that "e" the way you can. Value this & charge accordingly. 5. Do the Work: Be professional, meet your deadlines, care about details. You are your brand.

Please take a minute and vote for Rules for Healthy Living in The UNshow.
http://app.wizehive.com/voting/view/theunshow/4663/1128519 Why do I pander for your votes? Because design competitions are an indicator of the broader world. It's the whole big fish/small pond concept. Or the artist working in isolation concept. Take your pick. You have to put your stuff out there and ask, "Am I pushing myself hard enough?" Where should I specifically work on improving?" I don't strive to be "on trend." I strive to produce work that is relevant. My specific goal with this competition is to make the top 25 because that ensures that the completely rockstar judges will see my work. Of course I would like to win, but getting the judges to see my work is the primary goal. So if you think Rules for Healthy Living is a good poster please follow the link above and VOTE! In third grade I had a strict teacher. One day I was finding it difficult to sit still in my chair and I spoke out of turn and something else happened that I don't remember. What I do remember is that at the end of the day I was assigned 425 sentences. As in, "I will not speak without raising my hand." "I will sit in my chair." etc. This is third grade & I am 8 years old! 425 sentances?! It took up pages of my composition book. And while my hand cramped that night something else happened, I learned to manipulate letters. Drawing a straight line down the page and then hatching it off provided a column of "I's" This saved a lot of time. I remember the moment when I realized I could do this. That letters were just lines on the page that I could change & use for my benefit. It was heady. Maybe if I write this quote a few hundred more times I will remember to "be kind [to] everyone."
What are you going to do to make the year more awesome?
