If you follow me on Instagram then you have already seen this image, & I could apologize, but I won't, because I think it is truly beautiful & believe the world needs more beauty especially in the face of war & corruption. So enjoy the beauty & the signs of spring, especially if you are trapped in the neverending storms of the Northeast. And as always I wish y'all a happy Monday!

I am still experimenting with the gouache underpainting the wet wash/salt layers. The different colors that emerge as a result are intriguing. This overall painting has a blurry look & I rather like it. Perhaps I have been influenced too much by the fog of the past two weeks. As long as it advances the painting I don't mind. Happy Wednesday Y'all!
I have been making pom poms & pennants for weeks, thinking that they were for Valentine's Day. However they have not coalesced into Valentines, just masses of pink yarn & tape, joyful but not cogent. So I am sharing a salt painting test that reminds me of cell diagrams from high school biology class. What intrigues me about this painting is that it appears as if the salt crystals are still on the painting, but I can assure you they have been scraped away. Interesting metaphor for love & human interaction more generally: your love can change a person & even after you are gone your presence can still be seen in their actions. So be careful with your fellow travelers & love generously. Happy Valentine's Day Y'all!

Happy Friday Y'all! We had another particularly low tide yesterday so I went down to investigate the intertidal zone. Most of it is full of pluff mud, a quicksand like substance that will swallow your shoes faster than you can say the word shoes, therefore much of that expanse is not walkable. However there is a path right beside the bulwark that is passable. There were undulating cascades of oyster shells, the occasional turret shell, & lots of clams. Most of our other beaches do not have many shells, which I always thought was weird, so it was really exciting to see so many just a few steps down the bluff. Happy Tuesday Y'all!
I tend to overthink things. A lot. Sometimes so much that it impedes my progress. The author/ orator of these words is unknown, but I think these words fit nicely in the carpe diem pantheon of things I need to remember. Happy Thursday Y'all!
Yesterday the weather was gorgeous & friends with a boat were calling. No brainer, skip the studio, for a day & go outside. It was so worth it! In this clip you can see a dolphin surfacing thru the wake multiple times. Below are some observed shadows & the tide gullies running thru the pluff mud. Plenty of things to see & inform my studio practice, but while I was out there all I had to do was enjoy. Happy Tuesday Y'all!
There is a lot to unpack in this quote, but my brain is muddled from the cold I have been fighting all week so I will leave you with: Happy Friday Y'all! May your weekend be full of stillness, awe & wonder in the midst of this holiday season.
I came across this quote this weekend, in an advertisement for bags. It made me want the bags; not just because they had fun patterns, but because of their connection with this quote which seems to illustrate concisely the role of emotion in the work. When I work I am not thinking about emotion(most of the time). I am lost to the world of water, salt, oil, & pigment: watching water colors blooms happen, & salt morph paintings. Thinking about it I work with a sense of peace & anticipation, excitement over what I am going to learn next, what the pigment is going to do. However sometimes I go to my studio to calm my mind, & when I do that I am mostly disappointed with the work as it is too tight & jagged. So I think Tolstoy was correct, "art... is the transmission of the feeling the artist has experienced." Happy Monday Y'all!
